05 · Scene tools · 3ds Max

The scene fixes you'd otherwise script.

Clean geometry and CAD splines, set pivots, rename, swap materials and get a scene ready for Unreal or Unity. Built for heavy scenes, from the SAM menu in 3ds Max.

Built for heavy scenes

Native speed, inside 3ds Max.

The heavy work in Scene tools runs on SAM's own C++ engine, so checks and fixes keep up with big, inherited scenes instead of stalling them.

  • Geometry

Find and fix mesh problems, weld vertices, fix smoothing and normals.

  • Shapes

Clean, join, split and resample CAD splines.

  • Transfer

Set pivots, and copy pivots, modifiers and materials to other objects.

  • Selection

Select by material, layer, colour, name or likeness; hide and freeze.

  • Modifiers

Collect textures, proxies and XRefs into one folder or zip.

  • XRefs

Load, reload, remove and merge scene XRefs.

  • Engine Export

Check a scene for Unreal or Unity, make LODs and export.

  • SAM menu

    Scene Doctor

Scan a scene for junk, bad pivots and missing textures, and preview each fix first.

  • SAM menu

    Swatch

Swap a material across every object and Multi/Sub slot at once.

  • SAM menu

    Add Selection to Library

Save part of a scene as a clean model in your library.

Every command is searchable inside Scene tools, and on this page.

No. Library, downloads, Model Prep and the Set Builder are all in the SAM app, and Scene tools, Scene Doctor and Swatch (materials) are in the SAM menu in 3ds Max, with one install, one sign-in and one licence. They share one library, which is what makes the Set Builder possible.

Yes. Keep one 3ds Max open and SAM relinks missing maps in any model in your library without opening each file. In a scene, Relink Scene Assets in the SAM menu finds every missing texture, proxy and IES file and relinks it.

3ds Max 2025, 2026 and 2027 on Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit). Older versions of Max are not supported.

Yes. It proposes sets built from the models in your own library. If your library is missing something the brief asks for, SAM says so rather than filling the gap.

No. Models, images and thumbnails stay on your own drives, and image search, tagging and your Set Builder brief are handled locally.

SAM is Windows-only. A Blender connector is planned for Q4 2027; there are no plans for macOS at launch.

Yes. Studios and architecture practices can buy three or more seats on one invoice, billed annually, with a lower price per seat as the team grows. Studio licences are set up on request.
